A book about the important Portuguese painter Machado has been published:

Sofia Braga, Cyrillo Volkmar Machado (1748–1823). Um percurso artístico singular [Cyrillo Volkmar Machado (1748–1823). A unique artistic career], Lisboa (Caleidoscópio) 2023

Cyrillo Volkmar Machado (1748–1823) was one of the unique artistic personalities of the Portuguese 18th century. As well as being a painter, theoretician and art historian, his entrepreneurial nature led him to set up the first Academy of Drawing in Lisbon with a nude study, influencing all the artistic academies that followed, namely the Lisbon Academy of Fine Arts, founded in 1836.

His main activity was painting ceilings and walls, and he stood out from other contemporary artists. He produced several cycles with allegorical themes for the wealthy bourgeoisie of Lisbon, for the House of the Great and for the Portuguese Royal House, showing that he was keeping up to date with the plastic languages in vogue and that were already taking place on the European scene.

This book aims to show the life and work of Cyrillo Volkmar Machado, focusing on ceiling and wall painting, painting on canvas and his involvement in ephemeral art projects. One of Cyrillo’s facets was his dedication to architecture, which is why his contribution to the cycle of artists’ conferences at the Ajuda Palace was also discussed.
